The other night I finally got to experience my very first ballet, Sleeping Beauty, which was re-imagined by award-winning visionary director / choreographer Matthew Bourne. It was the opening night at the Center Theatre Group‘s downtown Los Angeles Ahmanson Theatre, and there was literally magic in the air. I was absolutely blown away by what transpired on stage, the production was simply exquisite from the detailed costumes to the lavish sets, and the cast was incredible. Plus the classical music by Tchaikovsky was gorgeous. Although you might already know the tale of Sleeping Beauty, this time around there was unexpected twists and turns, that definitely gives the classic fairy tale a whole new spin—this is certainly not the Walt Disney version. Sleeping Beauty is playing now through December 1st only, so you have to hurry down if you want to see this, I would highly recommend it. You can get more information and tickets here on this truly fantastic and magical production.
He set the ballet world on fire and reinvigorated dance theatre with daring new spins on Nutcracker! and Swan Lake. Now, the two-time Tony Award® and five-time Olivier Award winning choreographer sets his sights on the third and final Tchaikovsky masterwork.
Matthew Bourne (Swan Lake, Edward Scissorhands) returns to the Ahmanson, re-imagining Sleeping Beauty as a gothic romance complete with fairies and vampires, enchanting and arresting scenery and costumes: all in a fully immersive surround sound experience.
