Did Katy Perry secretly work with Britney Spears?

A couple weeks back, Britney Spears debuted her new song, “Ooh La La,” for The Smurfs 2 soundtrack. Because if there was one movie whose complex plot required a sequel to tie up the loose ends, it is The Smurfs. Anyway, Katy Perry was at the premiere this past weekend in Los Angeles where she revealed that she secretly did some backing vocals for Britney’s song, thus bridging the gap between big boobed pop stars of the 90’s and big boobed pop stars of today. MTV reports …

It’s the kind of superstar hookup of pop fan fiction dreams: Katy Perry and Britney Spears sharing a microphone to record a song. All right, so, technically, the dynamic duo weren’t in the studio at the same time, but Perry revealed this weekend that you can hear her singing some of the backing vocals on Britney Spears’ Smurfs 2 single “Ooh La La!”

“Me and Bonnie secretly did some background vocals on that song,” Perry told E! News on Sunday at the film’s premiere about the song written by Perry’s frequent collaborator, Bonnie McKee. “So maybe listen for our voices.”

Honestly, I’m not hugely surprised that they collaborated (even if it was just backing vocals) because let’s face it: pop songs are pretty much interchangeable. Most pop songs are written by third-party songwriters and pop stars scoop them up mostly be accident. I’d be more surprised if Britney ended up doing a duet with Grimes or Katy did a set with Crystal Castles.
