Just in case you’ve never been on the web before, there’s still a huge legal shitstorm brewing between file sharing sites and record labels over illegal downloads of copyrighted music because blah blah blah money and legal jargon, I don’t care. Point is, record labels hate sites like Megaupload. So major artists are lending support to the service by starring in a video (posted below), including Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg, Diddy, and … Kim Kardashian. All right class, let’s play “which of these things doesn’t belong? ANYWHERE?” Hint: It’s the one that smells like a whore. The Huffington Post reports:
What’s particularly interesting about the song is that those singing on the track are doing so despite the fact that the major label record industry reviles Megaupload for the ease with which its music can be pirated by those using the web service. In fact, UMG, which owns labels to which Diddy, Will.i.am and Kanye are all signed, moved to have the video removed from YouTube, with a back and forth on copyright issues ensuing. While the video doesn’t explicitly have the artists giving the thumbs up to piracy — “When I got to send files across the globe, I use Megaupload,” Will.i.am says in the song — there should be little doubt that they’re aware of the struggle between their labels and the web service.
I’m glad that artists are lending support to Megaupload, because they actually do way more than just pass music back and forth (which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t that big a deal.) Although it still confuses me as to why Kim is in this. Does she know people are passing her sex tape around on the site, or is she just that desperate for more attention?
